Published 07/12/2011

The Central Mass Phantoms 13U AAU team won the NE region AAU super division this past weekend. The Phantoms entered the playoffs as the #9 seed and swept through the playoffs with a 5-0 record allowing only 12 runs over the 5 games stretch. It was a complete team effort highlighted by Billy Barrett's three, 330 foot fence clearing home runs and 10 RBIs in the semifinal win. Kevin Valentine (1 run allowed), Greg Tobin (2 runs allowed), Matt Decinas (2 runs allowed) each pitched 9 innings on the mound and led a solid pitching staff in dominating fashion. Devin Beroth, Luke Cowen, Matt Hanna, Justin Leip, Chris Speroni, Steven Stuppiello, and Drew Wilde, all contributed big hits and were flawless in the field over the entire weekend.
The championship game ended with a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded and one out. With the tying and winning runs on base, shortstop Matt Decina made a nifty back hand stop and flipped to second baseman Matt Hanna who fired the ball to first basemen Steven Stuppiello to end the game and secure the championship.
The NE champion Central Mass Phantoms now move on to the Grand Nationals in Myrtle Beach next weekend.
