GREAT WEEKEND for the RIVERDOGS

The
RI River Dogs (10u) enjoyed the great
weather this past weekend and had a lot of
fun playing 4 exciting games against 2 great
teams. The River Dogs were able to sweep
doubleheaders both days and completed the
weekend 4-0.
On Saturday the River Dogs traveled to
Johnston Memorial Park to take on the always
tough RI Reds (Red) on their home field. The
River Dogs knew they faced a tough challenge
as the Reds had won the Baseball Heaven
Spring Classic in April and had beaten the
River Dogs twice earlier in the season. The
River Dogs also remembered that they had a
rough time the last time they played at
Kennedy Field when they were swept by an
excellent RI Reds (Gold) team. The River
Dogs were focused and started the weekend
right in winning the first game on Saturday.
Strong pitching (complete game) from Cam
Reid, good defense and timely hitting led to
a 4-1 win over the home team. In the second
game the River Dogs lead the whole game and
then had to hold on for an 11-10 win as the
Reds never quit and scored 5 runs in the top
of the 6th inning.
On Sunday the River Dogs returned home to
play the Blackstone Valley Spinners American
team. The Spinners presented a major
challenge for the River Dogs as the Spinners
had previously beaten the River Dogs 7-6
when they faced off in the NEAAU Spring
Classic. As they had against the Reds on
Saturday, the River Dogs responded well
against a strong team. Kyle Brown’s monster
blast in the 2nd inning which
landed well over the right field fence tied
the game and gave the River Dogs a lot of
confidence. However, the Spinners played a
strong game and carried a 4-1 lead into
bottom of the 6th inning. The
River Dogs showed their character and
refused to quit. Cam Reid got the River Dogs
within 1 run with his 2 run homer. Then
Dylan O’Donnell ended the game with a 2 run
walk off home run. Despite a bit of
unnecessary drama and controversy which
occurred after the umpires had already
signaled the home run and Dylan had
obviously touched all the bases, the River
Dogs got the win they earned on the field,
5-4. In the 2nd game, led by Kyle
Brown’s 2nd home run of the day
and 4 RBI, the River Dogs pounded out 11
hits in a 4 inning game for a 12-1 win and
the sweep of the doubleheader.
Great pitching, hitting and defense and most
importantly team work was the recipe for
success for the River Dogs over the weekend.
